QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER

(VOL - 11)

January - March 2025

The first quarter has been marked by significant progress in grassroots sports, athlete development, and holistic well-being. We continue expanding access to sports, empowering female athletes, and integrating vital support systems like mental health awareness, sports science, and legal education.

This edition highlights key achievements across our programs, including Simply Roots initiatives, the Simply Periods project in menstrual health education, and mental well-being efforts under Simply Smiles. We also share updates on our Badminton Excellence Program, Female Athlete Leadership Program, and scholarship initiatives. With new partnerships, impactful collaborations, and inspiring athlete successes, this quarter sets the tone for another transformative year in Indian sports.

1. Program Highlights

Simply Roots

In the first quarter, the Simply Roots initiative continued to deepen its commitment to building a robust and inclusive grassroots sports ecosystem across India. Our efforts were strategically aligned to enhance capacity, empower local academies, and ensure that young athletes, especially those from underserved communities, have access to meaningful opportunities to grow, compete, and thrive.

Our work this quarter focused on strengthening grassroots structures through targeted tournament facilitation, equipment support, and the integration of sports science into training. We played a pivotal role in enabling 7 key tournaments across regions, ensuring not just financial support but also guidance in structure, outreach, and athlete engagement. Notably, our partners Mrida Education and Welfare Society and Anantapur Sports Academy showcased exceptional performances, underlining the growing impact of sustained grassroots investment.

Through our equipment assistance, we enabled Republican Sports Club, Mrida Education and Welfare Society, and Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal to enhance their daily training environments—improving access to quality gear and levelling the playing field for emerging talent.

Building Knowledge and Raising Awareness

We focused on empowering young athletes, especially girls, through awareness of rights and safe participation in sports. Our training camps and events emphasized structured skill development across all levels, guided by experienced coaches. Increased involvement from underserved communities highlights sport's growing role in building confidence, connection, and opportunity at the grassroots.

Celebrating National Representation and Grassroots Success Stories

We are proud to share that 31 athletes from our Simply Sport Grant partner academies represented their states at the National Games 2025 in Uttarakhand across Rugby, Hockey, and Badminton. These athletes—trained, nurtured, and supported through our grassroots ecosystem—stood out as symbols of dedication and potential.

In Rugby 7s, the Odisha women’s team clinched gold, with three Future Stars Sports Academy athletes contributing to the victory. The men’s team earned bronze, powered by another of our supported athletes. From Future Hope, 23 out of 24 athletes represented West Bengal in both men’s and women’s rugby—an outstanding testament to consistent grassroots mentoring.

In Hockey, two athletes from the Republican Sports Club were selected for the Maharashtra state team, continuing our tradition of enabling state and national-level progression from the grassroots.

Towards a Sustainable Future in Grassroots Sport

At Simply Sport, we are not just supporting events—we are building systems. Our role continues to evolve from funders to enablers, mentors, and ecosystem-builders. Each tournament supported, athlete-trained, and session conducted is part of a larger goal: to redefine how grassroots sports are nurtured in India.

We remain committed to co-creating a future where every athlete, regardless of background, has access to the tools, knowledge, and platforms needed to succeed.

The dedicated centre will cater to both male & female shuttlers from the country under the guidance of expert coaches and professionals. The centre is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

The Female Athlete Leadership Program

The athletes in the Female Athlete Leadership Program had an enriching experience, with a series of valuable activities and sessions. They were given the opportunity to visit Decathlon, Bengaluru, and the Padukone Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence, where they gained insights into sports retail business operations and facility management.

Additionally, the athletes participated in a mentorship session led by Sanjana Govindan, Vice President at Goldman Sachs Group, which proved to be both inspiring and informative. We also conducted an online revision session, covering key topics such as female health, leadership skills, financial literacy, and career opportunities in sports. We look forward to continuing the program and completing the remaining sessions after their academic examinations.

Female Athletes Scholarship Program

We expanded our scholarship support by awarding 12 additional female athletes scholarships through our partnership with the Hi5 Foundation, reinforcing our commitment to empowering young girls in sports. These scholarships provide financial assistance for training, education, and essential resources, ensuring these athletes can continue their sporting journeys without economic constraints.

Athlete Achievements:

  • Charitrya Mogaveera was selected to represent Karnataka in the U-17 National Football Championship.

  • Somni Dhurwey earned a spot in the U-17 National Camp.

  • Somni Dhurwey and Rajeshwari contributed to their team’s victory in the Energia Cup and Inspire Cup.

  • Ashika Orean, Kirti Munda, and Riya Oraon represented the West Bengal Rugby Team at the National Games.

Through these efforts, we continue to support young female athletes in achieving their potential, both in sports and education, fostering long-term growth and success.

Simply Periods

The first quarter of 2025 has been a landmark period for the Simply Periods Initiative under the Simply Sport Foundation, with breakthroughs in both reach and impact. We conducted 22 workshops, impacting 964 individuals, including 171 coaches and 793 female athletes. One of the biggest achievements was completing the third and final phase of the Capri-partnered Uttar Pradesh project in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh State Sports Department. This phase included workshops and end-line data collection across Ghaziabad, Noida, Aligarh, Agra, Ayodhya, and Lucknow, engaging 403 female athletes and six coaches. The project culminated in the release of the Play Without Pause report, a comprehensive assessment of menstrual health literacy among female athletes in India.

Another milestone was the Rainmatter by Zerodha-supported workshop for female para-athletes at Parishrama Divyang Sports Academy in Bengaluru, a significant learning experience for the team. This workshop went beyond education, incorporating a focus group discussion (FGD) and targeted data collection with 17 para-athletes and their caregivers to better understand their unique challenges. A key highlight was the Great Goals Workshops held in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu. Here, we introduced a gamified version of our menstruation workshop, making the learning process more engaging and interactive.

Additionally, workshops were conducted at the Hi-Fi Foundation in Mumbai, Army Sports Institute in Pune, and Art Corner Gymnastics Academy in Bengaluru, along with online sessions with Padukone Sports Management and Rugby India.

This quarter, we also launched a six-part Yoga series focused on helping athletes find relief through the different phases and symptoms of the menstrual cycle. This series was possible due to the support of Rainmatter. The series, through simple exercises and techniques, guides athletes through the right exercises and postures that can help them overcome symptoms like abdominal pain, cramps and mood swings.

In partnership with Cranberry, we launched the Simply Berry Tracker Program to support female athletes in two key sports ecosystems. At the Naval Tata Sports Academy in Jamshedpur, we introduced the tracker to 30 female athletes and coaches, empowering them with better menstrual health insights. Additionally, at the Army Sports Institute Girls Company in Pune, we are piloting a six-month period symptom management program for 25 female athletes across five sports. This initiative goes beyond tracking by providing access to a gynaecologist, essential medications, and supportive products, helping athletes manage symptoms effectively and optimize their performance.

We're thrilled to announce that our groundbreaking period tracker program is set to debut at the Bihar State Sports Authority with a pioneering cohort of 200 athletes. With our cutting-edge technology fully integrated into the government platform, we're on track to begin onboarding next quarter. This milestone marks the first state-level initiative aimed at revolutionizing period health and athletic performance—paving the way for a healthier, more empowered future.

This quarter we also spent some valuable time redesigning our athlete and coach modules and making them more age-specific and activities-focused to build better learning outcomes for our stakeholders. This process of redesigning was conducted by Mr. Praveen Naidu an expert in building learning development frameworks and facilitation. We revisited each of our modules to make it more experiential and hands-on. We have already seen some great results with this approach.

Simply Smiles

Simply Sport Foundation’s mental health initiative, Simply Smiles, made significant advancements in early 2025 as we continued our mission to embed mental well-being into the sporting ecosystem. Through impactful collaborations and targeted interventions, we prioritized athlete empowerment, coach education, and the creation of safe sporting environments. This quarter, we conducted 12 workshops, reaching over 500 individuals across the sports community, including coaches and female athletes. Our efforts spanned multiple institutions, workshops, and networking events, driving meaningful conversations and fostering a lasting impact on mental health awareness in sports.

In collaboration with Trelleborg, we conducted six sessions this quarter with the Outplay Foundation on navigating mental health in sports. This session addressed critical aspects such as recognizing signs of mental distress, managing stress and performance anxiety, and equipping athletes with resilience-building techniques. Our work extended to Sri Ma Academy, where we focused on the unique challenges faced by women in sports, creating a space for female athletes to discuss their mental well-being and develop strategies to enhance confidence and mental resilience.

One of the key discussions this quarter was the IndusInd Bank panel discussion on balancing personal relationships and professional athletics, featuring insightful contributions from the head of our Mental Health Initiative and moderated by the Lead of Women’s Initiatives at Simply Sport Foundation. This session explored the pressures of maintaining relationships while competing at high levels and how athletes can manage their mental well-being while navigating these challenges.

Our commitment to coach education remained a strong focus this quarter. Workshops with the Oscar Foundation and Akanksha Foundation provided coaches with the knowledge and tools needed to recognize signs of mental distress in their athletes and to foster a psychologically safe sporting environment. These sessions emphasized the critical role that coaches play in supporting players' mental health while also highlighting the importance of their own well-being in sustaining a positive and healthy sporting culture.

A major milestone for Simply Sport Foundation this quarter was the official appointment of the head of our Mental Health in Sport Initiative as the Child Safeguarding Officer for the foundation. In this capacity, she led our first-ever Child Safeguarding session, conducted specifically for sports scientists. This session focused on building awareness around child safety, ensuring young athletes’ rights are protected, and educating key stakeholders on their responsibility in creating a secure and ethical sporting environment. Recognizing the increasing need for safeguarding measures in sports, this initiative marks a significant step towards building a culture where young athletes feel safe, supported, and empowered.

Additionally, we collaborated with the Army Sports Institute (ASI) to conduct a session on mental well-being for women in the armed forces, focusing on resilience, stress management, and psychological skills required to thrive in high-pressure environments. A highlight of the quarter was our Women in Sport Networking Event in collaboration with Indian Sports Circus, where we engaged in vital discussions on menstruation, nutrition, and mental health for female athletes. This event provided a platform for athletes, coaches, and industry professionals to connect and share experiences, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing women’s well-being in sports.

We further expanded our outreach through additional workshops, including a session with Great Goals, where we impacted 200 athletes, a partner-led workshop that engaged 15 stakeholders in mental health initiatives, a session with Victory Foundation that reached 30 athletes, and workshops with AKG and Selenite in Bangalore, focusing on resilience and mental well-being for coaches and athletes.

As we conclude this quarter, we reflect on the progress made in integrating mental health awareness into sport and the collective efforts of our partners, experts, and institutions in breaking the stigma surrounding mental well-being. Moving forward, we aim to deepen our impact, expand our initiatives, and continue advocating for mental health and child safeguarding as fundamental pillars of athlete performance and overall well-being. Through ongoing education, research, and collaboration, we remain committed to strengthening the sporting ecosystem and ensuring that every athlete and coach receives the support they need to thrive.

 4. Stories From Our Ecosystem

In the quiet village of Barkheda, nestled in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandla district, a young girl named Somni Dhurwey dared to dream. The youngest of four daughters in a family of farmers and labourers, Somni’s world changed in 2019 when she joined Mrida and touched a football for the first time at the Narmada Valley Football Academy. What started as curiosity soon became an unstoppable passion.

Under the guidance of her coach, Kailash Raj Sir—her mentor and father figure—Somni transformed from a beginner to a leader. With relentless dedication, she honed her skills, rising to become the captain of the Madhya Pradesh Sub Junior Girls team. The moment she lifted the championship trophy after winning the Sub Junior Girls National Championship was a dream come true.

However, her journey was not without struggles. Coming from a tribal community, she faced the harsh reality of limited resources and societal norms that discouraged girls from pursuing sports. Balancing football with education was another battle, especially with frequent travels for tournaments. But with the unwavering support of Mrida, the Simply Sport Foundation, and her family, she found the strength to push forward. Scholarships, better training facilities, and sports psychology sessions helped her grow both on and off the field.

Her proudest moment came when she received a call-up for the U17 Girls India Camp. With her eyes set on representing India, Somni continues to chase her dreams, determined to inspire others and uplift her community through sports.
